Sails for Science – NZ is a citizen science organization partnering with schools to collect and extract eDNA from the local environment and then detect the presence of marine invasive species via in-classroom qPCR and DNA sequencing.
More Information:
Sails for Science aims to increase science engagement in Northland colleges by sparking interest in the diverse scientific methods available to study and protect our marine environment. Students in the program embark on a local biosample collection voyages, extract environmental DNA from their samples, and detect the DNA from invasive and non-indigenous species (NIS) via in-classroom qPCR and DNA sequencing. This project enables student scientists to participate in critical field research and deliver the first molecular surveillance dataset on marine NIS in these important Northland regions, informing their communities and providing actionable data to the regional council.
